Fear. Love.
Two of the most powerful forces in the animal kingdom and human fiefdom.
Certainly not mutually exclusive though they often tangle, tango and intertwine. There is definitely not a straight line when it comes to understanding either and the effect on our mind.
Heavy and Light.
Many connotations to each. Heavy thoughts. Light repartee. Heavy message. Light within. Heavy emotions. Shining Light.
Many shades. Heavy duty. Light weight. Heavy weight. Light innate.
Heavy and Light.
I'll admit that, while I was familiar with To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) as an organization from visiting their booth at Warped Tour every year, when the HEAVY AND LIGHT Tour was first announced, my focus was not on the thoughtful arching concept of the evening as I was focused on beholding the majesty of Christina Perri once again.
Christina is truly a shining light beaming a heavenly gait, though as I fully comprehended later, her performance would only be the icing on the cake.
Christina Perri (TWLOHA)
House of Blues, W. Hollywood, CA
Jan 30, 2013
Setlist:
1. Trust
2. Arms
3. Run
4. Distance
5. The Sun & The Moon
6. A Thousand Years
7. Jar of Hearts
8. I Believe
While Ms. Perri proved once again that she is a rocketship on the rise, as she led a crowd sing-along of the Twilight: Breaking Dawn thematic masterpiece "A Thousand Years," and orchestrated a three-part harmony of her exquisite TWLOHA-inspired "I Believe," it was two words, in the context of a long stage-side confessional that will forever stay with me and light my heavy weigh.

Fear. Love.
Almost as if she was at the head of a classroom during "show-and-tell," Christina sat on the front edge of the stage and shared a story relayed to her by a taxicab driver, a self-professed shaman, who put up both fists and said one is "Fear" and one is "Love".
Equally powerful amidst the eternal struggle for the transference of Heavy And Light between the two.

Which one, in you, will outweigh the other?
Fear can be a devastating inhibitor but can also be an inspiring motivator.
Make one Heavy. The other will become Light. It's in your control. It's up to you.
Fill your heart with love. Let Fear be an energy that can propel you. Don't let it overwhelm you. Embrace it. Face it. Interlace it. Ventilate it.

Christina did so with intimate poignancy as she bared her soul a shade differently than she does in her songs. She spoke of depression and struggles to get out of bed and battles with self-esteem.
As she continued to air her heart, a calm joy washed over the room. It was therapeutic. A warm embrace.
We're all human. We all have struggles. We all have Heavy and Light.
Perri's admissions and recollections brought into focus the unifying purpose of the event...an evening of songs, conversation, and Hope.
It was more than just a run-of-the-mill "storytellers" type of evening.
The songs, stories and poetry shared by Jon Foreman and Fiction Family, spoken poet Anis Mojgani, Now Now's Cacie Dalager and Jess Abbott and TWLOHA Founder Jamie Tworkowski were a comforting embrace to everyone, from the dedicated fans of each artist to the VIPs in balcony land (Kevin Lyman was in attendance with his daughters).
Not per se a formula, but a format, if you will, and with the Hollywood show being only the fourth show of this kind ever, it was deeply engaging and while, overall, I was thoroughly entertained, what I left with and am left with is SO much more.
HOPE. LOVE.
