GRATEFUL DEAD To Release Europe '72: Vol. 2 As 2-CD Set On Sept 20

LOS ANGELES, CA: Nearly 40 years ago, Grateful Dead released Europe ’72, a triple live album documenting its historic trek across Europe that became not only one of the band’s best-selling releases, but also set the gold standard for live Dead. Now the group proves you can never get too much of a good thing when it revisits that legendary collection with EUROPE ’72: VOL. 2, an essential continuation of the original that includes more than two hours of unreleased performances from that storied tour.

Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux, who produced this 20-track compilation, says he only chose song titles that did not appear on Europe ’72 as a way to complement the original. “I think this album, coupled with Europe ’72, represents a complete overview of the tour in every way,” he says. “In fact, songs like ‘Beat It On Down The Line,’ ‘Next Time You See Me’ and ‘Sing Me Back Home’ were selected by the Grateful Dead for the first set, but were left off because there wasn’t enough room.”

In a nod to the original, VOL. 2 features new cover art by Stanley Mouse, the artist who helped create the iconic artwork from Europe ’72, which features the return of the legendary Ice Cream Kid. “Trouble comes in many flavors. Ice Cream Kid is in hot water. The jury is out. His only defense is love,” says Mouse of the Kid’s return.

Recorded at various locations during the band’s 22-show tour, the performances on VOL. 2 feature Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Ron (Pigpen) McKernan (sadly, his last tour), plus some of the earliest shows with pianist Keith Godchaux and singer Donna Godchaux. The collection captures the Dead in white-hot moments of improvisational revelry as the band explores a number of its most enduring songs, like “Bertha,” “Sugaree” and “Playing In the Band,” plus relatively obscure cuts like “Black-Throated Wind” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle.”

As a special treat, the set includes an epic hour-plus jam that combines “Dark Star” and “The Other One.” Recorded at the Bickershaw Festival, it was the only show on this tour where the band broke out both of these beloved improvisational showpieces. VOL. 2 also includes “Good Lovin’” and “Dire Wolf” from the April 26 show at Jahrhundert Halle in Frankfurt, West Germany. While much of that concert was released on 1995’s Hundred Year Hall, these particular tracks were not included and have remained unreleased until now.

The high-quality sound heard on VOL. 2 stems from painstaking work done by Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years. For this release, he mixed each show from the original 16-track recordings while two-time Grammy®-winning engineer David Glasser mastered the music to HDCD specs.

Not only does EUROPE ’72: VOL. 2 provide a welcome sequel to one of rock’s best-loved live albums, it also serves as an indispensible primer for EUROPE ’72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS. Also due out in September, this massive 73-CD collection includes every note from the Dead’s European tour. While the limited edition version quickly sold out, music-only copies are still available for purchase at dead.net.

KEIKO MATSUI The Musical Road From The Mojave Desert To Alaska

With over a million and a half albums sold and sold out concerts around the globe, keyboardist Keiko Matsui is a citizen of the world and one of the brightest stars in instrumental music.

Earlier this year, Shanachie Entertainment released Keiko Matsui’s The Road…, her 22nd album and a follow-up to her acclaimed 2007 South African inspired Moyo.

Building on the success of the album’s first single “Affirmation,” featuring Kirk Whalum on saxophone, Ms. Matsui recently filmed a sublime music video for the majestic title track which features another preeminent sax player, Jackiem Joyner.

Directed by Phil Lee, the video showcases breathtaking aerial views of Keiko playing a white grand piano in the Mojave desert along the outskirts of Palmdale, CA.

The lush impressionistic choreography in the video for The Road... echoes Keiko’s visionary musical ability throughout the album of the same name as she exhibits a natural affinity for melody while effortlessly transcending boundaries; borrowing from such diverse idioms as jazz, classical, rock, blues, traditional music of the world and beyond.

Over the course of three decades, Keiko's free spirit and creative genius have afforded her the luxury to share the stage with everyone from Stevie Wonder and Miles Davis to Hugh Masakela and Bob James. Keiko will soon be gracing stages once again, beginning with a four-day stint at the world-famous Yoshi’s in San Francisco, CA on August 3rd.

From there, she will commence on the second leg of her U.S. tour with shows at clubs, theaters and wineries throughout California before embarking on a seven-day cruise as a performing artist aboard the Dave Koz and Friends At Sea excursion from August 26 – September 2nd.

Aside from performing worldwide, Keiko (pronounced Kay-Koe means ‘happy celebratory child’ in Japanese) is an activist by nature, using her music to speak to the world while also lending her voice to causes championed by organizations like The United Nations World Food Programme, Be The Match Marrow Registry and The National Donor Program and Marrow Foundation.

PARAMORE Move On With WARPED Dark Moon MONSTER

MORE is now less but, more or less, the PARAllelless same...

WE are PAR-A-MORE

Officially moving forward as a trio, PARAMORE unveiled a video earlier this week for a newly-penned post-Farro brothers song called MONSTER which appears on the soundtrack to Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Other artists on T:DOTM include Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Staind, Mastodon, Art of Dying, Theory of a Deadman, Stone Sour, Skillet, Serj Tankian & Black Veil Brides.

PARAMORE
MONSTER

You were my conscience, so solid, now you're like water
And we started drowning, not like we'd sink any farther
But I let my heart go, it's somewhere down at the bottom
But I'll get a new one and come back for the hope that you've stolen

I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world
From turning into a monster and eating us alive
Don't you ever wonder how we survive?
Well now that you're gone, the world is ours

I'm only human, I've got a skeleton in me
but I'm not the villain, despite what you're always preaching.
Call me a traitor, I'm just collecting your victims
And they're getting stronger
I hear them calling.

I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world
From turning into a monster, and eating us alive
Don't you ever wonder how we survive?
Well now that you're gone, the world is ours

Well you find your strength in solutions
But I liked the tension
And not always knowing the answers
But you're gonna lose it, you're gonna lose it

I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world
From turning into a monster, and eating us alive
Don't you ever wonder how we survive?
Well now that you're gone, the world...

I'll stop the whole world, I'll stop the whole world
From turning into a monster, eating us alive
Don't you ever wonder how we survive?
Now that you're gone, the world is ours.

In other news, Paramore, led by singer Hayley Williams, just wrapped up a half dozen shows on this year's Vans Warped Tour (with one more to go in San Diego). The seven appearances mark the first U.S. concerts since the departure of founding band members, drummer Zac Farro and guitarist Josh Farro.

The band, which made their Warped debut in 2005, played a rousing 40-minute set at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls as a formidable six-piece (with count 'em, three guitar players...and four if you count the fan that came up on stage to play during "Misery Business").

Each of their three releases were represented (Twilight's "Decode" was replaced with Transformers' "Monster") with a grand finale explosion of red and orange confetti capping the early evening proceedings.

Smiles abound all around at the end of a Paramore show...

It was business as usual.

V-ROYS Suit Up Again For SOONER OR LATER And NYE Reunion Show

Knoxville, TN: Landing September 27 is SOONER OR LATER, the first-ever compilation from THE V-ROYS, the seminal roots rock band that influenced a generation of Alt-country revelry.

Vocalist/guitarist Scott Miller, lead guitarist/vocalist Mic Harrison, bassist Paxton Sellers and drummer Jeff Bills left an indelible footprint on the music community during their succinct but illustrious run from 1994-2000 in which the quartet released two critically-acclaimed studio albums, Just Add Ice (1996) and All About Town (1999), and one live album, Are You Through Yet? (2000).

The 18-track collection of remastered material releasing on Miller’s F.A.Y. Recordings pairs thirteen previously released album tracks including fan favorites “Guess I Know I’m Right,” “Fade Away” and “Cold Beer Hello” with five unreleased studio recordings.

Added to the mix are unreleased covers of Tom T. Hall’s “That’s How I Got To Memphis,” Neil Young’s “Burned,” and Leiber and Stoller’s “Smokey Joe’s Café” (from the Add Ice era) with the unearthed originals, “Hotel Room” and “Someone To Push Around” from the About Town sessions. The two newly restored tracks, both penned by Harrison, represent the only unreleased original songs stashed in archives.

Bills was the driving force navigating the waters of putting together a retrospective that both the band and the fans will hold in high regard, “The goal at the onset was to make it sound as good as we could. We had a production standard we tried to shoot for and did everything in our power, short of animal sacrifice, to get there. “

Miller adds, “When Jeff (Bills) gave me the final mastered version of this compilation, which he really put the effort into making, he had written "Sooner or Later or Just Whenever" on the disc. "Perfect!" I thought. I think we all knew we'd do it sometime. It’s nice to hear (and play) these songs again. I'm proud of what we did and I think it still stands up."

Sooner or Later is poised to entice a new generation of music lovers to become acquainted with these sharp-dressed-East-Tennessee-men as the original E-Squared releases are long out-of-print and are not available on digital portals such as iTunes and Amazon. In fact, most of Gen “Y” likely did not have the distinct opportunity to experience the real fruition of The V-Roys, that of a burning hot set raisin’ the rafters of a sweaty packed club.

The V-Roys played their last show on New Year’s Eve 1999 at the historic Tennessee Theatre in downtown Knoxville. With nearly a dozen years of perspective for collective reflection, it wasn’t just another show at a historic theater, but the close of a historic chapter in the annals of a fiery brand of Americana.

Lives move forward. In the years since the turn of the millennium, Miller and Harrison have enjoyed successful solo careers with both continuing to tour around the country. Bills runs Lynn Point Records which has released several dozen artists’ albums including three by Harrison as well as a live album from original V-Roys guitarist John Paul Keith. Paxton joined Mic and Jeff in 2000 for a project called The Faults before segueing into the corporate work force.

Memories live on. Legends beget infamy. In 2009, The V-Roys were named the best Knoxville band ever in a poll hosted by Metro Pulse, the city’s weekly newspaper and iconic tastemaker No Depression continues to feature glowing archived articles about the group.

Chatter of the band’s stature in the grand pantheon of Alt-country and “live” rock ‘n roll has been on a slow simmer for the past decade and will soon reach a feverish boil with the planned “One show; Goodbye” New Years Eve blowout at the historic Bijou Theatre, located right up the street from the Tennessee Theatre.

For this special show-of-a-lifetime, the band will treat fans to a lengthy all-encompassing set of their recorded catalog and favorite covers. Tickets, priced at $35, will go on-sale September 9th.

4217 days later and the reverential dam hath opened. The cognoscenti reckoned it would happen sooner or later.

EVOLOVE Breaking Heartstrings And Binding Minds Of The Utmost Kind

Hollywood, CA: On August 9th, alt-rockers EVOLOVE, fronted by charismatic vocalist Lucy Levinsohn, will release their sophomore Ep BREAKING HEARTSTRINGS, the inaugural release on the band’s very own HeartChord Records. In addition to being available via iTunes and other digital outlets, Hot Topic stores will offer a version on CD as well as exclusive band apparel.

Systematically erecting a delicate balance between soaring melodies and aggressive elegance, Breaking Heartstrings represents a natural evolution expanding upon the musical footprint of 2012: Countdown to the End, an auspicious debut mixed by Brian Virtue (Audioslave, 30 Seconds to Mars, Deftones) that fostered an array of key placements on ABC's top-rated teen drama Pretty Little Liars as well as MTV’s hit shows Made, True Life and Teen Mom.

Amps and emotions on overdrive embolden Heartstrings as first single “Wake Up Call” carves a psychological hole in the center of the sun with its penetrating urgency igniting a meteor shower of wattage. Led by the twin stack, guitar attack of Dave Corsile and Colby Jensen and bolstered by the propulsive low-end theory of bassist Billy Berman, it’s a four-minute gut-check that packs a heavyweight wallop.

It’s no head fake. “Wake Up Call” has the potential to unite a nation of “broken heartstrings,” so to up the ante; Levinsohn recently collaborated with Swedish audiovisual phenom Iggi Ogard (Piñata Protest) on an elaborate story-driven music video.

Filmed during one twenty-hour day on a horse ranch in the celebrity-filled hills above Mulholland Drive, its visual arc is a mélange of campy revelry, old western folklore and a dab of voodoo.

Rounding out the remainder of the five-song Ep, producer Michael Eisenstein (Letters to Cleo, The Posies, Cruiserweight) adds a trademark pop sheen to the mid-tempo “Irony of Life,” the anthemic alt-rock of “Four Walls,” the theatrical Iron Maiden dynamism of “Fear (Is A Four Letter Word)” and the passionate yearning of “Nothing But Me” which brings to mind power ballads by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shinedown and Staind.

Last summer, EVOLOVE (pronounced Eh-Voh-Luv) were thrust into the national spotlight as finalists of the FreeCreditScore.com band search.

Debuting the group’s commercial during the MLB All-Star game on FOX, the spot amassed millions of impressions across broadcast and cable spectrums. Significant airplay on outlets such as ESPN, CNN and CNBC led to further exposure on MTV and LA’s KTLA TV.

Congealing the TV awareness with incessant touring, EVOLOVE was a featured artist during Hot Topic’s successful “Shop Till You Rock" tour before commencing on a non-stop canvassing of festivals, bars, all-ages clubs, high schools and key industry events including the 2011 Winter NAMM Convention and the 25th Annual SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX.

This summer, EVOLOVE is putting the rubber to the road once again on their first-ever cross-country jaunt. Joining them for the initial batch of dates are Hollywood hard rockers STITCHED UP HEART (led by glitter-girl Mixi Demner), whom also have a new Ep entitled ESCAPE THE NIGHTMARE on the horizon.

Both bands will then assimilate an axis point of a Reinforcement Tour triumvirate coalesced by ethereal metal quintet GEMINI SYNDROME and its lead prognosticator, Aaron Nordstrom.

RAGE And Education On Parade At L.A. RISING On July 30

L.A. RISING AT THE LOS ANGELES MEMORIAL COLISEUM

Rage Against the Machine and Goldenvoice have teamed up once again to present L.A. RISING, the first major rock show at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (100,000 capacity) in 11 years.

Joining RATM on July 30, 2011 are Muse, Rise Against, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Immortal Technique and El Gran Silencio though L.A. RISING is about more than just the music. Each band participating in this historic event wants to raise awareness about the social issues plaguing Los Angeles and to accomplish this; L.A. RISING has established the “Re-Education Camp.”

The Re-Education Camp is a collection of 30+ local and international nonprofit organizations presenting issues that affect everyone in Los Angeles. Participating organizations include Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), US Uncut, Sound Strike, Communities for a Better Environment (CBE), Enlace, Cuéntame, Jail Guitar Doors, peta2, Bus Riders Union, Instituto de Educacion Popular Del Sur de California (IDEPSCA), Greenpeace, PATH and Axis of Justice (a non-profit organization formed by Tom Morello and Serj Tankian).

L.A. RISING has invited each nonprofit organization to participate at zero cost in an effort to help the organizations promote their causes and raise awareness. The four major areas of concern include: WAR, IMMIGRATION, POVERTY and LABOR.

“We are passionate about ending the wars overseas, immigrant rights, protecting working families, and combating hunger and homelessness in L.A. We want to present our fans the opportunity to get informed and get involved while we rock them senseless.” Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine

Morello describes L.A. RISING as “a concert of the city, by the city, for the city” and delves a bit further in episode numero cuatro of an online video series entitled Guerrilla Videos:

In the clip, Morello reveals that the L.A. RISING show date closely coincides with the 20th Anniversary (August 1991) of the formation of Rage Against The Machine.

He waxes poetic about Rage's first rehearsals at Sunbirth Studios in the 110 degree heat of the San Fernando Valley, opening for Tool when both bands were unsigned locals and how they initially tried to make music that sonically mashed Nirvana's Bleach with Ice Cube's "most murderous" tracks.

Guerilla Video numero uno features RATM bassist Tim Commerford:

Tickets for L.A. RISING are on sale for $99 and $69 and are available via Ticketmaster.com or by phone at 1-800-745-3000. More info about L.A. RISING can be found on Facebook

Sharon suggested Shenanigan’s but Wally had an eerie reminder of a certain woman who may or may not be there.

He didn’t want to find himself making awkward excuses about a woman he had hooked up with weeks ago.

“How about the rodent?” Wally said. Sharon nonverbally said okay and the two found themselves dancing to 80’s hits like “Billie Jean” and disco songs that will never die. “Dancing Queen” and “Stayin’ Alive” topped the disc jockey’s list.

The place was wall to wall packed, making it difficult for them to get down. They were yelling at each other because the music drowned out any possibility to have a conversation. For a man with no dancing experience, Wally moved pretty well. He had watched a great deal of videos and picked up moves by mimicking Usher and Justin, which were essentially moves popularized by Michael Jackson. But it was the year 2006 and the kids, nowadays, believed Jacko was a scary looking caricature dreamed up by Tim Burton.

“You’re a good dancer,” Sharon screamed, who was doing the swaying, left to right action as best she could. She couldn’t dance and she knew it. It wasn’t a priority for her.

“What?” Wally said.

“I said, you’re a good dancer.”

“Check this out,” Wally said, hearing that the song was one he saw the video to hundreds of times. In a flash, Wally was breaking out moves that he must have had stored in his subconscious. Either that, or he was James Brown’s lost soul. Wally was spinning around like a ballerina, dipping down like he was competing in a limbo contest, and moving left to right like a Solid Gold dancer. Sharon stood in amazement, as did the small crowd that formed a circle around him.

Some began to clap to the rhythm, while others, a few hip-hop girlios yelled out, “It’s your birthday,” and “That boy is fly. He is fly.”

Sharon became smothered between two people squeezing in to admire Wally. Everybody was cheering him on, chaos to the full extent, was how one person described it to his friends.

The song finally ended with an eruption from the onlookers. Wally regained his awareness and walked away in embarrassment. Sharon followed him, still in awe...

“I love the title ‘Hello Lesbian!” Chuck Palahniuk, Author of Fight Club, Choke & Rant

Jason Tanamor, award-winning writer and Editor of Zoiks! Online, recently re-released his cult classic novel Hello Lesbian! with a different cover and format. “When it originally came out in January 2007, I designed it to look like a junior high level book. It’s a really funny, ridiculous story. The problem is the novel is filled with obscene language and raunchy humor; it’s a story geared toward adults,” said Tanamor.

Influenced by Chuck Palahniuk (“Fight Club”) and Dave Barry (“Big Trouble”), Tanamor nicely blends a mix of light and dark humor with a raunchy stench of obscenity. “There is a strong sense of humor and in your face obscenity,” Tanamor said. “This is definitely not a book for those easily offended with sex and bad language. Some of it may be tasteless but everything contributes to the humor and charm of ‘Lesbian!’”

Tanamor also edits Zoiks! Online magazine, a leading online entertainment website, is a featured contributor for Yahoo!, and was named one of the most influential bloggers by Blogebrity.
