Trucking through nearly every state in the union on WARPED TWENTY TEN, alt-rockers NEW YEARS DAY began to peel apart the sun-kissed layers of a tightly-knit musical cocoon that found the Orange-county foursome of vocalist ASH COSTELLO (aka Count Ashula) , guitarist DAN ARNOLD, bassist ANTHONY BARRO and drummer RUSSELL DIXON metamorphosize from youthful hook-laden emo-rock to a mélange of tongue-in-cheek macabre, dark molten ghoulishness and a molotov of mischievousness.
Imagine if Dexter Morgan (w/ sidekick Eric Northman) hosted a late late late night talk show in a haunted mansion deep within the Enchanted Forest, then NEW YEARS DAY would most assuredly be their house band with warm blood-spattered bottles of True Blood offered in the "red room" for the visiting "undead". In fact, uniting the living, the dead and the undead in a perpetual quest to pay joyous homage to Samhain (Celtic New Year's Day named after Sama, the Aryan God of Dead) may very well be the band's unifying motivation.
So, as the fall harvest unfolded with Hallowmas on the horizon, it was time once again for another unassuming audience to GET DEAD with NEW YEARS DAY; this time at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood as a part of the venerable KROQ Locals Only showcase that found the band on an action-packed bill with Death Punch, Majority Lost and The Darlings.
Tick tock it's ten o'clock; the curtain ascends, syncopated muscular riffs emerge and vampira Ashula, the mistress of ceremony, dashes to the front of the stage, immediately commanding attention, obedience and an utter release of all standoffishness as she sternly encouraged the crowd to clap, dance and sing along. Ash's (to ashes, dust to dust) dynamo presence brings to mind Hayley Williams of Paramore and Juliet Simms of Automatic Loveletter.
Over the next 40 minutes, NEW YEARS DAY, powered through a heated lock-box of new material that could have easily have been dubbed the ROXY HORROR MUSIC SHOW. The propulsive set included a menagerie of visceral anthems and the debut of a brand new ripper called "2 in the Chest, 1 in the Head," a heavy-duty ménage à trois of Bauhaus, Misfits and S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death).

The band has honed its vision and aggressively uses social media to engage their growing fanbase. Lady Gaga has her "Monsters," VersaEmerge; their "Vultures," and NEW YEARS DAY has their "Creeps". The New World Order has taken hold.
Count Ashula is also canvassing the exulted nights preceding All Hallows Eve in a protracted effort to frighten strolling lovelies at an OC Halloween Haunt:

-Chants Of India CD (1997) Creating music for ancient Sanskrit chants, while still maintaining the tremendous integrity and purity of them was a welcome challenge that George Harrison and Ravi Shankar undertook with great care and deliberation. Recorded over three sessions, two in Madras India and one in London, the music was composed by Ravi Shankar and produced by George Harrison. This album sold over 100,000 units in the US alone, and has been out of license for over five years.
-Music Festival From India CD (1976) Under the auspices of the Material World Charitable Foundation, George Harrison invited Ravi Shankar and 17 Indian classical musicians including Shivkumar Sharma, Alla Rakha, Sultan Khan and others, to London to record an album. This troupe then toured Europe, culminating in a show at London's Royal Albert Hall. Composed by Ravi Shankar and recorded during five weeks in 1974, this album was produced by George Harrison. This album was only released on vinyl, and has not been available for over 30 years.
-Shankar Family & Friends CD (1974) The first joint recording project between George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, 'Shankar Family & Friends' brought together Indian classical musicians and Western rock and jazz musicians, including Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Jim Keltner, Tom Scott, Klaus Voormann and Hari Georgeson (George Harrison). Composed by Ravi Shankar and produced by George Harrison, one half of the album comprises instrumentals and songs, while the second half is a thematic ballet to a yet un-staged performance. This album was only released on vinyl, and has not been available for over 30 years.
-Music Festival From India DVD (1974) The DVD is a rare, previously unreleased concert performance of Ravi Shankar's 'Music Festival From India' recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1974. DVD includes the concert film, separate concert audio and bonus feature (Ravi and Anoushka Mixing in 5.1).
George Harrison opened the Royal Albert Hall show with a warm introduction for his friend Ravi Shankar. This entire concert was originally filmed and recorded for the Material World Charitable Foundation. Over the years, many of these master films have been lost, destroyed or misplaced. This bonus DVD compiles all the complete filmed performances discovered from this historic concert, and the entire concert in stereo and 5.1 audio.
Last night, LISSIE, a modern-day hippified trobairitz, enthralled a ravenous sold-out crowd at the Troubadour in LA; in what was her first semi-hometown show (she moved from LA to Ojai, CA) since releasing her critically-acclaimed full-length debut CATCHING A TIGER over the summer.
Flanked by the tasty Jimmy Page/Lindsey Buckingham inspired guitarwork of Eric Sullivan and the booming ambi-appendaged thump of Lewis Keller on both bass AND drums, her 75-minute set featured all of the songs from her magnificent WHY YOU RUNNIN' Ep as well as a healthy dose of TIGER tunes laced with an impromptu acapella of "You Are My Sunshine" (during a temporary sound problem) and a tequila-shot inducing, roof-raisin' take on KID CUDI's "Pursuit of Happiness".

"Catching a Tiger is a debut that dreams beyond typical new artist parameters... she sounds like one of the greatest female vocalists of a generation, arguably without even really trying." - BBC Music
BROKEN PIECES is the 2nd single from 7th SYMPHONY, the new album from Finnish rock cello quartet APOCALYPTICA. Broken Pieces features vocals by Lacey Sturm of the band FLYLEAF.
APOCALYPTICA BROKEN PIECES (FT. LACEY STURM) Too late, this is not the answer I need to pack it in I can't pull your heart together With just my voice alone
A thousand shards of glass I came to meet you and And you cut the piece out of me.
And as you ripped it all apart That's when I turned to watch you And as the light in you went dark I saw you turn to shadow
If you would salvage some part of you That once knew love But I'm losing this And I'm losing you
Oh, I've gotta turn and run From faces that you've never seen Oh, I've gotta save my blood From all that you've broken I hold these pieces of me
It's too late now To stop the process This was your choice You let it in This double life you lead Is eating you up from within A thousand shards of glass You pushed beneath my skin Left me lying there to bleed
And as you showed me your scars I only held you closer But as the light in you went dark I saw you turn over I wanted always to be there for you and close to you But I'm losing this And I'm losing you
Oh, I've gotta turn and run From faces that you've never seen Oh, I've gotta save my blood From all that you've broken I hold these pieces of me
The broken pieces I hold these pieces of me The broken pieces I hold these pieces
Maybe without me you'll return To all the beauty I once knew But if I stay I know We will both be drowned by your holding onto me
Oh, I've gotta turn and run From faces that you've never seen Oh I've gotta save my blood From all that you've broken I hold these pieces of me
The broken pieces I hold these pieces of me The broken pieces I hold these pieces of me
