INFANTREE Unveil Food For Thought On May 4

INFANTREE is a Los Angeles-based band which formed in 2007 with Alex Vojdani (vocals, lyrics, guitar, keys) Matt Kronish (vocals, lyrics, guitar, banjo) and Donald Fisher (vocals, lyrics, keys, bass, mandolin, guitar) as high school students in Calabasas, CA before solidifying the line-up in 2008 with the addition of drummer Jordan Avesar who provided not only a serious backbeat, but also a psychological glue.

Alex, Matt and Donald began playing guitar and writing songs in elementary school. They naturally picked up other instruments through jamming with older musicians that would not relinquish the ax. There’s a shifting, track to track, from one writer/lead singer to the next, and who plays which of nearly a dozen instruments. Yet, there’s a cohesive, rooted sound, to Infantree that completely belies their youth.

2009/2010 has been quite notable for the band, their song, “Overflowin’” from the self-released Tree-P has received spins on KCRW’s prestigious Morning Becomes Eclectic, the band opened shows for Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Portugal the Man and Daniel Lanois’ Black Dub performed at Outside Lands in San Francisco, the Bridge School Benefit concert and the recent SXSW Music Conference. The band also managed to play more than 200 shows on Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade; one of which was filmed for GorillAcoustic.com.

With a full-length release in the works for this fall on Vapor Records, INFANTREE is set to whet music lovers appetite on May 4th with a mesmerizing platter of sensory candy; carefully selected morsels to contemplatively ingest underneath their shady branches. So dig in, climb up and experience a different view of what’s around you.

SXSW 2010. Ten Best. Ten Worst.

(Lissie. Photo by Braedon Photography)

2010 marked my tenth SXSW Music Conference so it seems apropos to punctuate it with a 10 Best and a 10 Worst.

TOP TEN TITILLATIONS:

1. LISSIE. A relatively new discovery, I was excited to see her perform for the first time and although I was able to catch five (yes five) of her shows it was still only 50% of 'em...this deluge of shows over a short few days reminded me of when I traipsed all over Austin at SXSW in 2002 to see a new singer named Norah Jones. Flash forward to Lissie, an engaging Americana-meets-Appalachia singer/guitarist who, like Ms Jones, fronts a tight-knit trio; this one flanked by lead guitarist Eric Sullivan and bassist/drummer Lewis Keller. This talented threesome exhibits an innate understanding of pure-bred rock 'n roll dynamics culminating in epic songs such as "In Sleep" from Lissie's forthcoming Fat Possum/Columbia debut. This Fleetwood Mac Rumours-era tour-de-force was my daily antioxidizing elixir; its most potent potion concocted at St David's Episcopal church on Friday night, one that immersed the congregation in a triumphant melding of vintage ambiance and soul-bearing transcendence. Can I get a Hallelujah?

Another Lissie highlight was her cover of "Nothing Else Matters" mere steps from where METALLICA, themselves, rocked my face off from the Stubb's main stage one year prior and precisely where Norah Jones transfixed a crowd of fifty on her way to superstardom. It's time to inaugurate another. The freight train is a comin'...and the 2011 Grammy for 'Best New Artist' goes to... Check out Lissie at My Space

2. HOLE at Dirty Dog bar. With a truncated by-the-numbers set that included a smattering of fan favorites and covers of "Sympathy For The Devil," "Gold Dust Woman" and "Bette Davis Eyes," it was a distant wail compared to the incendiary Hole shows I saw back in 1994 but Courtney being Courtney is always worth the price of admission (or in this case the unbearably long lines...see below). Case in point, Courtney stage dove at the end of her set on top of a guy (who was standing next to his wife) and rode him to the bar where she drank a Budweiser and proceeded to casually converse with the bartender. In concert with this chit-chat was a sardine-inducing mad rush of overzealous fans wanting to capture the moment which included yours truly sandwiched two people over from Ms Love. As the clocked ticked past 2AM, it oddly felt like a surreal rock 'n roll moment.

3. VAPOR RECORDS showcase at Maggie Mae's on Wednesday night. A tremendous evening of artistry featuring Everest, Jets Overhead, Pegi Young (with band members from husband Neil Young's band), Jason Yates, Infantree & Lost In Holland. Good vibrations accented by cold libations as my friends stopped by to soak in the sonic vapors. Visit Vapor Records.com

(Everest at Hotel St. Cecelia)

4. WARNER BROS. RECORDS hosted an intimate day party at Hotel St. Cecilia on Thursday. Accompanied by sunshine, mineral water and a plate of tacos, I settled in for mesmerizing stripped-down back porch performances by THE LOW ANTHEM and EVEREST. Bliss.

5. HEY MONDAY at Cedar Door. Holding court before Never Shout Never took the stage, Cassadee Pope and her band Hey Monday delivered a high-energy set of sing-alongs from their anthem-filled Hold On Tight album. Comparisons to Paramore are an easy but inaccurate assessment. Visit Hey Monday Music

(Cassadee Pope from Hey Monday)

6. BECCA at Rusty Spurs. Went on a recommendation and was really impressed by her emotive in-your-face vocals and commanding stage presence. Channeling Avril Lavigne, her songwriting mentor Meredith Brooks and a rambunctious mix of big-chorus 80's Rock and Top 40 Pop, Becca effortlessly struts a Stratocaster while playing with joyous aplomb (even some behind-the-head riffing). Her deftly-produced album ALIVE!! was previously issued through Sony Music Japan and was released in the U.S. a few weeks ago. Visit BeccaOfficial.com

7. INFANTREE at the BAMM RV in the Expo Hall. One of my favorite new bands did an acoustic set with three-part harmonies that was broadcast live over the internet via Justin.TV. Imagine Layne Staley buddying up with Jim Morrison and John Lennon over a psychedelic bolero or two and you're on the path to visualizing an Infantree sprouting in the forest. Visit InfantreeMusic.com

(LIGHTS at Paradise Cafe)

8. LIGHTS at the Canadian Blast showcase at Paradise Cafe. Her sugary sweet synth-pop posturing on candy-coated ditties like "Saviour" and "Ice" provided an apt musical cocktail for Friday afternoon. Visit I AM LIGHTS.com

9. KITTEN at Submerged. A rapturous L.A.-based outfit fronted by singer/guitarist Chloe C. who is a burgeoning mix of Deborah Harry meets Chan Marshall from Cat Power (felines unite!). Thanks to Jon at The Vinyl District for the heads-up on Kitten. Visit Kitten at My Space

(Chloe from Kitten)

10. FOODIST...Aji sushi at Kenichi, Spicy Chicken Tortilla Sopa at Manuels on Congress, Mmmpanadas Empanada Truck, Death Metal Pizza & the Downtown Burger stand. Also want to give props to the Austin Convention Center, Antone's and other venues that provided free drinking water.

An extra ladle of temptuous gravy for: CITIZEN COPE at Sesac Day Stage; STONE TEMPLE PILOTS at Austin Music Hall, FIRST AID KIT at the Fontana/Vevo party at Speakeasy and for both SUM 41 and JETS OVERHEAD on Maggie Mae's rooftop.

(Luke Renshaw and Jocelyn Greenwood of Jets Overhead)

These bursts of SXSW euphoria were, at times, subjected to unmitigated psychological buffering by the...

TOP TEN TEMPESTUOUS TIME-SUCKING TRAVESTIES:

1. T-Mobile: Network went completely AWOL for 4 hours one day. Frequent "no signal". My feet were mobile, my T was not.

2. BlackBerry: My Bold kept randomly rebooting over and over and over again (a laborious mind-numbing time-suck).

3. Four Square App: Seemed to accurately locate about 5% of the venues I was at; very often couldn't find itself.

4. Blustery cold weather on Saturday. 41 degrees augmented by bone-chilling winds required re-routing and extra layers of Patrón (por favor)!

5. Line to get in to see Hole at Spin's party at Stubb's. One in; One out. Once upon a time when we were young...

6. Line to get in to see Hole at Dirty Dog bar. Badges only. One in; One out - except for friends (and their friends) of the doorman.

7. Line to get in to see Hole at Perez Hilton's party. 1700 more RSVPs than capacity. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

8. As always, competition for one's attention span is fierce. Due to this overbearing reality, I'm reticent to admit that I did not once go in to Emo's, La Zona Rosa, The Driskill, any SXSW panels or Las Manitas on Congress (Holy Guacamole!).

9. Cab drivers in Austin. Always trying to run the meter and then copping an attitude (or feigning ignorance) for payment by plastic which they begrudgingly took their sweet-ass time in processing.

10. Snow?!? in Dallas. As my air travel connection city, it was incredulous to hear on Sunday morning that it was 32 degrees and snowing in Dallas; prompting a delay to de-ice the airplane before we took off. De-Ice in Dallas?!? In late March? WTF?

Time-sucks aside, SXSW is still the only place where nearly 2000 bands play over the course of four days. Fairly ridiculous. Viva Tejas!

HeavyAsHell.com Launches With $10,000 Giveaway

Olympia WA: After one year in beta, HEAVY AS HELL.COM announced its public relaunch on March 1, 2010, and within 24 hours broke its own traffic records. The site fills a gap in the social news community for fans of rock, metal, punk and other guitar-based genres.

HeavyAsHell aggregates the best stories about “heavy” music from around the web. It sprung from the negative experiences founder MARK CARRAS had with other news aggregators that buried or denied stories about harder genres, literally shutting out fans, journalists and bands from the benefits of social news. While the site will provide a haven for certain types of music, says Mark, “Heavy is in the ear of the beholder. Johnny Cash covering NIN’s “Hurt” is heavy.”

There are two registration levels at HeavyAsHell. Bands register an account with basic information to create a page that will catalogue all its news. Everyone else – fans, writers, bloggers, site runners, labels, publicists – register as users. Users are essentially site editors. Users can submit news, reviews, videos and photo links that they find on the web. They can comment on content, and can vote on posts which in turn will position the story higher on the site. These various activities accumulate “sins” (points). There will be benefits to being an active sinner.

Starting March 1, HEAVY AS HELL.COM will be giving away more than $10,000 in prizes to the top registered users. Each week, the top user will win $1000 while the second place user gets $500 and the third place $250. Additional prizes will be provided by Nuclear Blast America, Prosthetic Records, Rock Ridge Records, the band Mongrel and others. Users will be ranked automatically by their submissions, comments and voting activity. Full Rules and Conditions will be posted on the site at heavyashell.com/contest.

Also during this first month, MARK CARRAS will host a live streaming video show during which he will respond to user questions and comments, and connect with the community. Mark has a deep interest in providing music fans with the most interactive tools the internet has to offer, and is particularly enmeshed with the heavy music world. In the late 1970s, Mark’s father brought home a used computer to refurbish as a father and son project. That turned into a decade- long obsession with the technology, and by the early 1980s, Mark taught himself programming. Around that time, he also started Mosher’s Mayhem, an old-school Xeroxed fanzine for guitar-based music. This led to a public access video show, giving further exposure to artists. In 2000, Mark moved this visibility to the web, launching AbrasiveRock.com, which in 2006 morphed into RockMyMonkey.com, a site Mark still operates, providing news, reviews and interviews (including with Anvil, Judas Priest, Testament, DropKick Murphys, Tenacious D, Twisted Sister, Fear Factory and KISS).

The software behind HeavyAsHell is SocialVoter. SocialVoter is a Web 2.0 CMS that allows for the users to control the content (similar to Digg or Mixx). It was written by Keith Wagner of DarkerNemesis.com and is an open source program.

JAG STAR Announce Record Release Show For Friday March 19

Pop-rock quartet JAG STAR has announced a special hometown record release show on Friday March 19th at THE SQUARE ROOM in Knoxville.

Led by singer-songwriter SARAH LEWIS and husband J on guitar, JAG STAR will perform selections from their critically-acclaimed fifth album STATIC BLISS as well as fan favorites from their twelve-year canon of material. A long time fixture of the vibrant Knoxville music scene, the group is eager to play the new songs for their fans, friends and family. Sarah reveals "We are so excited to finally play in our hometown again after a two-year absence. We're back with a brand new album that we can't wait to play live while for me personally, it will also be interesting because I'm sporting a nice big baby bump, as J and I are expecting our second baby, a boy, this summer!"

The upcoming gig will mark the first time JAG STAR has played at The Square Room, a state-of-the-art performance venue in the historic Market Square District in downtown Knoxville. For this extra special show, the quartet will expand with the enlistment of Patrick Powers as a second guitar player, a respected musician who played on the heartfelt track ‘Sofie,’ a song from the new album about Lewis’ daughter. The show will also mark the debut of new bassist Brian Davis who will anchor the group’s tight-knit rhythms with drummer Brad Williams.

With a conscious desire for the celebration to be centered in bliss, the band considered both fans as well as those in the broader community who are enduring economic struggles by choosing a low-dough ticket price of only eight dollars from which they will donate twenty-five percent of the proceeds to KW CARES, a public charity created to support Keller Williams Realty associates and their immediate families with hardship as a result of a sudden emergency. J, whom has a real estate license, is a strong believer in giving back to the community "KW CARES is a wonderful charity that supports cancer research charities, disabled veterans’ trusts, and emergency financial assistance to members of the KW family. We're happy to be able to help this organization that has given back so much!" More information about KW CARES can be accessed at KWCARES.ORG.

STATIC BLISS (produced by Travis Wyrick) finds JAG STAR’s big bold choruses in perpetual motion. One listen to the soaring guitars of lead-off track “Talk To Me” and the unbridled enthusiasm “Shine” and one can easily imagine an arena full of fans vocally uniting as these epic songs fill every crevice with their expansive sound. Elsewhere, the ecstatic bliss takes a momentary breather with the introspective lyrical immediacy of “A Different Road” and the lilting ethereal soundscape of “At The End” while the band’s joyful energy punctuates the fluid modern rock of “Rewind” and the pixie pop-punk sound of “Pressure” which has an accompanying video shot by director Glenn Sweitzer of Fresh Films (Pam Tillis, Antebellum, Whiskey Falls, Hal Ketchum). Static Bliss was released digitally in November to coincide with placement of “Talk To Me” in ‘Mr. Right Now,’ Episode 19 of Season 5 of MTV’s The Hills. A CD version is available at Amazon.com, as a part of their official Artist Store, and locally at Disc Exchange.
